Ultima Memoria Dell'Anno - 1

We would go there at first out of fascination, later out of habit and eventually out of boredom. Two or three nights a week we would all sit in a big, empty house, one that cost close to £1m and drink ourselves silly. They had the money and the time and we just wanted something exciting to do. In the end it turned into anything but.
I didn't really work. Every afternoon I would get out of bed at half twelve and drive slowly to an office where I spent a few hours of the day chatting to people and answering enquiries. I lived in a daze and every night was a drunken one.
I'd get home, bone thin, not eating still and someone would call and before I would know what was happening my flat mate was shoving me into the shower and I was putting on my make-up, blackening my eyes, straightening my hair, putting on a low cut top and heels. We'd drive up even though it was in walking distance and the boys would answer the door and we would go inside and all along the counter tops in the kitchen would be lined with various spirits and mixers and bottled beers and alcopops. They would pour them for us and give us lollipops to suck on. Fill up a tray of shooter glasses with sambuca and we would all do them together and dance around the hallway to Akon or some Brazilian music and the lights would be low and foreign voices were everywhere.
Sometimes in the house, people were having sex.
I never saw it happening, but the guy who owned it would occasionally come down and chat to us with a nondescript but very pretty girl on his arm. He'd shove her out the door and come and join us, coax us all outside into the garden where there was a hot tub and take photographs. They provided us with shorts and t-shirts to wear and we were all friends in some capacity but I never really knew them. There was always a lot of food. The brother would cook on the BBQ and bring it over to us, keep us supplied with drinks.
On Sundays we would all sit in the jacuzzi together and pass around bottles of whiskey and rum and sambuca and all take large swigs one after the other. The air was always warm and all our legs interlocked under the water, the constant feeling of soft skin on mine and mist and music.
We all had another home.
But none of us wanted to be there.
In that house, we were someone else. We existed for that only.
We partied every night of the week and the weekends were worse. We would meet up with them in nightclubs and go back for more parties. I'd occasionally pass out on the top floor in the gym and wake up the following day in the afternoon, still drunk with no idea what was going on. I'd go downstairs and the brothers who lived there would be asleep in their beds, or on the sofa's and I'd be locked in. No way out. A security system to keep everyone out and us all inside.
Most days at work I would be sick and shivery. On the nights I would be back there dancing on tables or sat in a hot tub doing shots of vodka. I drove home drunk a couple of times and nearly got caught by police. I cried a lot when I finally came round.
When they left and moved to another country, my flat mate cried and said she'd miss them. I breathed a sigh of relief at the prospect of getting my life back on track.
When I pass the house now, pretty much every day, I remember what it was like to feel that low. I remember all the things I know that I will never share. And I wish that I had had the dignity that runs through me today.

you remember what you want to forget'..."

Che Balla!

The past couple of weeks have been interesting and varied... and dare I admit it, I have been very happy...
Last weekend was random, my flat mate and I went out on the Friday and met up with some people I don't really know that well but who we ended up taking a cab to another town with and going for a midnight meal in a weird restaurant. We drank cups of tea and took photos. The two boys who were twins charming and posh and southern, both training to be pilots and their father trying to set us up with them. We went back to his house and sat in a dark room with guitars all around the walls listening to Pink Floyd and drinking champagne. My flat mate left early and one of the twins walked her home and I stayed with the other where we kissed on the sofa and exchanged numbers. He told me I was the first person he had kissed in two years.
He walked me home at around 6am in the snow and we laughed at the car bonnets, someone drawing rude pictures on them all the way along the high street. He held my hand and spoke gently. He kissed me by the doorway and said he'd call me the next day. Which he did. And we spent the next evening together as well, I took him out to some bars and clubs and his father watched on and the other twin got annoyed and when he walked me home he told me he was a virgin and I told him he would be perfect for someone his own age. Someone as innocent as he was. I couldn't handle all of that responsibility and hugged him goodbye.
I have joined the gym. Another new years resolution that I have managed to stick to. I am very proud of myself. Last weekend, in between the Twins and going out I had two sessions with a personal trainer and I have been twice this week as well. Going to get my ass in gear soon and head down there. I can't believe I am actually enjoying it...I'm really surprising myself with this one....!
I took the new job. I start on Monday. I'm not nervous, but I hope I like it there. Yesterday was a hard last day at the old job....at 3pm the receptionist rang me and asked me to go down to cover her for five minutes whilst she ran to the ladies and when I went down the whole of the office was in there with a big bag of presents. I went bright red and nearly cried. They'd bought me a Filofax, novelty mug, teddy bear, vouchers and a big Estee Lauder bag filled with make up. Everyone had signed the card and I was really touched by it all, I hadn't expected anything. I will really miss them. But I am also thinking that it is time to move on, I just hope I don't regret it.
So all in all, so far this year hasn't started too badly. I had another hospital appointment on Thursday and two consultants pretty much gave me the all clear with what I was worried about. I have one more test I'm waiting back on, which I'm still stressing over but hopefully I should have that in a week or so. I just hope it's alright.
I'm having fun. I feel great. I am really happy.

Lunedi

At the weekend two of my friends from university came to stay.
We hadn't seen each other in over four years and after five minutes together it was like we had never been apart.
We laughed and talked about the exact same things as we did then, it felt great having people close again. With me all the time. And this brought me to the conclusion, after all this time and self reflection - I am actually rather lonely.
I remember what it was like to have another person beside me, and I don't fear it anymore... I crave it.
I think for the past two years I've been avoiding relationships subconsciously because I'm afraid I will ruin it again. Either that or they will destroy me like N did.
I don't want to go back to that.
A scared shell with nothing to look forward to.
I'm not the sort of person to chase or look for men. I need them to do the work. But it's got to the point now where I am so sick of this boring existence - because that is all it is, there is no real living involved - that I am going to have to.
I got head hunted for a new job. Some company who build random security systems for Navy submarines want me to write and edit all their documentation and copy...with all my knowledge of submarines it should be a breeze....ha!
Don't think I'll take it. It's less money than I'm on now and I hate starting over. I'm pretty settled where I am even though I know my days there are numbered. Need inspiration for something better. Something I really want.
Suggestions welcome....

2010

Happy New Year....!
I had an unusually good Christmas this year. If it wasn't for this ridiculous snow I suppose it would have been even better as I have been unbelievably hindered by it - no high heels, no trips to the parents for tea (I have actually had to cook for myself) and no easy way around. In short I have been stuck and now it is a Friday night and I am in bed at midnight.
I shouldn't moan though as I'm actually quite grateful for it.
Over the Christmas period all of the nights out blurred into one. On all of them I was drunk. I sang with friends. I danced with strangers. I kissed a boy who was very tall with dark hair and had one of the most interesting sense of humors I have ever come across. He walked me home and we swapped numbers by my doorway before I went inside. He called me straight away, drunk and staggering home in the snow. Now he's off the radar and I doubt I will see him again.
At least I didn't let him come inside.
New Years Eve and I did shots, I drank Champagne and wine and kissed my friends at midnight. None of us could see straight and I left with my friend K and walked to a restaurant where I had an argument with a boy I don't even know before getting a taxi to a house party.
I left at 8am and felt sick and tired in the car on the way home.
My New Years Resolutions
  1. Rejoin the gym - this idea works twofold as not only will I hopefully get fit by working out and playing some sort of sport (I'm thinking tennis) it will also keep me away from pubs/nightclubs and open new doors for me meeting interesting and exciting potential husbands.
  2. Quit smoking. I have smoked on and off (more on) for nearly ten years now which I guess is actually very, very bad. I fear not only what's going on inside but also the skin factor... I won't stay all wrinkle free forever and I don't want to look like my aunt....seriously....
  3. QUIT BINGE DRINKING. Or you know what, just drinking in general.

I am ashamed to say that I lasted the grand total of one day on these last two resolutions and I haven't even joined the gym. On Saturday 2nd I went out like I do every Saturday and drank to excessive amounts, made a complete idiot out of myself, staggered home in the cold nearly falling on the ice and woke up still very, very drunk on the Sunday and threw up once I got to my parents house and tried to eat something. I did this again on Tuesday - but to the rather random effect that I only had three drinks which turned out to be cheap vodka doubles. I woke up on Wednesday morning, was sick, called work and lied to say I was stuck in the snow and couldn't make it in for a few hours. Went back to bed. Woke at twelve and ate a whole packet of biscuits to stop me vomming again.

It has to end. I have to put the effort in.

Let's see how I fair tomorrow....

Today

Today has been scary.
I went to the hospital for a test. I hadn't really thought about it. Some scan I didn't even think was really necessary and suddenly I'm being told there's something there.
I cried on the way home.
My sister says I need to start looking after myself.
Because let's face it....I haven't....
I've been doing the complete opposite.
I was so upset I didn't go back to work. I retreated to my parents front room all day, curled up on the couch under a blanket by the Christmas tree...watched The Grinch with my nephew and fell asleep with him for the rest of the afternoon. When I woke up it was around four and I was bleary eyed and still scared shitless.
Now I'm at home in bed and it's all I can think about.
I've been terrified of something like this happening since I was 18 and suddenly aware of my own mortality and the fact that I had something to live for.
I'm going on a detox tomorrow. No booze or bad food for two weeks.
I don't care about the fact it's Christmas.
I'm tired.
On the verge of collapse.
And looking completely fried.
And it's actually damaging me on the inside now too...

Regression

I don't drink on the scale that I used to. I had what most would call a burn out during the best part of 2008.
In that time I lived alone. I drank most days, to excessive levels that clouded my judgement and scared all that were close to me. People started staring. Some commented. Occasionally I would half realise that something was very, very wrong. But then continue anyway.
I never worked.
I slowly lost so much weight my friends were even scrutinizing the tops of my legs. Saying they were sinewy.
Most Saturdays and Sundays I would wake up naked and alone, my shoes, whatever dress I had been wearing and handbag spilling all of it's contents would be still by the front door. I would never remember getting home. I was always still drunk.
And I don't mean a little bit drunk.
I mean absolutely plastered.
Not capable of walking in a straight line drunk.
Six or seven hours after I had stopped drinking.
I would crawl into the bathroom and be sick in my Villeroy and Boch toilet. And when I looked in the mirror a ghost looked back. Black eye make-up all down my face, smeared red lipstick, my skin blotchy and steaming. I'd scream and cry at myself in the mirror. Occasionally I would consider gouging out my eyes so I didn't have to see it anymore.
Fragments would reappear, and I'd sob about it. Sometimes they involved others. Sometimes just me.
Falling into things.
Hurting myself by accident.
I always had bruises.
Sometimes, they were there for weeks.
The boy I started dating looked worried because on an evening when I was with him, I would drink. Even if it was just a bottle of wine, usually it would end with me giggling childishly and him stone cold sober and shaking his head. He was an athlete and rarely touched alcohol. I was a mess and trying to hide it from him. At some point he told me I drank too much. I wanted to tell him I was nervous about having a new relationship for the first time in ten years and this was the only way I could control it. But how could I be nervous all the time?
He'd sit on my couch drinking lemonade and I would down a bottle of Pinot Grigio. Occasionally on nights out he'd hold onto me and say "Take it easy."
One night we stayed in a hotel and in the morning there was smashed glass all over the floor and my lip was bleeding. He looked at me as if I was crazy when I asked him what had happened. Seriously not believing that I couldn't remember anything about falling off the chair I had been dancing on and knocking my face off the corner of the dressing table.
The best times I shared with him were when we were both sober. During the day when he'd pick me up and take me for lunch somewhere and we'd order ten dishes and pick at them and spend hours talking. Or just lounging around the house when he didn't have to train. Drinking cups of tea and watching silly action movies. One day we drove up to Leeds and I bought him a sandwich and as he drove he steered the wheel with his knees and I kept grabbing it, scared. He'd drive fast and sing along to the music, tucking his long dark hair behind his ears and I'd smile to myself because I fancied him like mad and if I could have gone back to being with N, I never could have seen myself in that sort of situation with someone else.
In the beginning he'd fall asleep holding my hand and without a doubt wake me up around 6am speaking in Spanish in his sleep.
I know he cared about me, and I really did about him too.
We dated for eight months and when it ended I wished I could have opened up to him and relaxed around him more.
He had a really lovely way of looking at the world.

For N, An Apology

I've never felt better in the last 3 years than I do right now and I don't even have a legitimate reason for it.
I lost the love of my life because I'm an idiot and was too young to handle the pressure we were put under. Maybe this is why I'm the way I am. Or, should I say, the way I was. I know a large part of our relationship breaking down was my fault. And for that I need to say sorry.
I think for at least ten months after we split I was in shock.
I didn't function properly and all I cared about was going out, getting wasted and wishing, wishing, wishing that I could find someone else to love me. In literally, any capacity. The consequence of this was random relationships, with random people I didn't even really care about - save one exception. Which just made me feel like shit. After the shock there was the anger, then desperation, then sadness..."madness" as I like to call it because when I read my diary back now it absolutely terrifies me. I missed him and our life together. But I had to accept that I'd never get it back.
Two years on and I finally feel better.
That was a long time to be in pain for, but it's better to come through on the other side knowing that surely, if only now, things have to and will only get better.
I tried to get him back, but to no avail. He's moved on....even after we'd spent over ten years being the most important people in each others lives. He doesn't want to know anymore.
And I guess, who could blame him?
Suddenly, I have grown up. But I never would have if I had still been with him. Even if we had carried on just being friends, I regressed back to being a child whenever I was near him. We were stuck in teenager mode. And I mean constantly. Argument after petty argument and when we started spending time together again it only dragged all the negativity back up. Both of us still clung to the things that had grated on us then and the fact we had been apart for so long only magnified them.
I will always miss him though.
And my love for him will always be there.
I can never forget how amazing it all was. And how lucky I was to have him.
It's a shame we hadn't met now.
